Wow, has Harry Kane ever been a stud on the pitch this season. Kane is doing unthinkable things for Tottenham, and if he keeps it up, he will etch his name in the EPL record books.

Harry Kane’s Season so Far

Harry Kane’s 2020-21 EPL season is on pace to shatter records. The England striker has been involved in 15 goals this season (scoring seven and assisting eight) in only eight matches this season. That is five less than he managed last season and 18 off last year’s leader Kevin De Bruyne (who had 13 goals and 20 assists). Kevin De Bruyne tied the EPL record with 20 assists in a season.

Kane is averaging 1.88 goal involvements per match this season. If he plays an entire season at the same pace, he will finish 71 goal involvements for the season. His play has football punters, handicappers, and sportsbooks from all over, even the best Delaware sports betting sites believing Tottenham can win the Premier League.

Can He Break the Record?

The EPL record for goal involvements in a season 44 (24 goals and 20 assists) by Thierry Henry in 2002-03. That averages to 1.19 goal involvements over Henry’s 37 matches.

Assuming Kane stays healthy and plays a full 38 matches, we can project out Kane’s chances of setting the goal involvement (and the single-season assist record) record in the English Premier League.

Upcoming Schedule

On paper, Tottenham fixtures are challenging for the rest of 2020. Kane and the Hotspurs face Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Leicester City before the calendar flips to 2021.

Liverpool is an interesting matchup for Kane. Liverpool ranks third in goals allowed (16) entering Matchday 9, just under half as many goals (33) as they allowed all last season. Liverpool’s defensive woes this season could allow Kane to keep up his record-setting pace, even if a few other opponents slow him and Tottenham down.

We will give Kane two points over those five games.

Easy Start to 2021

Once Kane and the Spurs reach 2021, the path to the record is much easier. Tottenham plays Leeds United, Sheffield United, and Brighton & Hove Albion all in January. Leeds United has allowed the most goals in the EPL – 17 through eight matches – while Sheffield United and Brighton are tied for the fifth-most goals allowed.

Against these weaker clubs, we give Kane six points in three games.

Can Kane Duplicate his Success in Two Rematches?

The next games that will play a big part in whether Kane can set the record are the rematches against Southampton (on March 20) and Manchester United (on April 6). Kane had five points (one goal and four assists) in a 5-2 against Southampton in September, while Kane’s three points (two goals and one assist) helped the Spurs crush Man Utd 6-1 in October.

Southampton has played much better since their shellacking at the hands of Tottenham, with four cleans sheets in their following six matches.

Manchester United should play much better defensively in their rematch against Kane and Tottenham. United allowed nine goals in their first seven EPL matches this season – with six or 67% coming in that 6-1 loss to the Spurs.

In the rematches, we expect Kane to get a point in each.

The Remaining Matches on the Schedule

Taking Kane’s 15 points (goal involvements) and adding the ten more we project gives Kane 25 in 18 matches. That puts Kane at 1.39 per match. At 1.39 per match, Kane will easily clear the record if he plays all 38 matches – finishing the year as the first player in EPL history to clear 50 goal involvements with 52.8 (round up to 53 for the sake of argument).

Even if Kane averaged a single point per match in the remaining games, Kane would squeak past Henry’s record by one goal involvement (45 to 44).

With the way Kane and Son Heung-min (who has eight points and two assists) have played, we expect the Spurs to continue pouring in goals. While his current rate of nearly two points per match is not sustainable, he should break Henry’s record, break the assist record of 20, and become the first EPL player to be involved in at least 50 goals in a season.
