In the early rounds of a draft, it is easy to focus on the prolific goal scorers and the creative midfielders. Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso presents a different option.

The Spaniard is one of the most valuable players to pick early on, based on last season’s form. Having surprised many with his displays throughout the previous campaign, he will hope to do so again in 2017/18.
Why would Marcos Alonso be such a good pick?
Alonso topped the charts for defenders last season with an impressive 166 point return, without the Kante rule in play. That is, in part, down to his attacking contribution.
His six goals and three assists made him a prolific point scorer last season. Being on free-kick duty towards the end of the campaign, only saw him add to his goals from open play scored throughout the season.
He could get better and better in terms of goals and assists next season, especially with Eden Hazard absent for the early stages of the campaign.
Alonso is also assisted by the quality of his team-mates. Chelsea’s strong defensive record meant that his side kept 15 clean sheets in addition to all of his attacking contributions to his point tally.
Where should he fall in your list of priorities?
Very high. In fairness, most players tend to go for strikers and high scoring midfielders in the early rounds of the draft, so you won’t want to miss out on those.
Once it comes round to defenders, Alonso should undoubtedly be at the top of your list. The highest scoring player in his position last season, he will be high on the list of all players.
Alonso’s offensive style and Chelsea’s strong defensive record mean that he will be very attractive proposition.
The Spaniard would be an ideal third round pick, once you have picked big hitters in your side, but before you start to fill out your squad.
