In Draft Fantasy Football, it is better to aim for long-term rather than short-term gains and it is crucial not to be too hasty when deciding to get rid of a player based on poor form.
That said, a player with depreciating value could be worth trading out for one that is on the rise. Every move you make is risky, but it is necessary to be pragmatic if you want to come out on top.
Here are three players you should pick and three you should drop:
Three players to pick
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Manchester United
This is one of the more obvious picks as the Armenian has started the season in great form. There were unknowns before the season started regarding his playing time and role, but he will be a key man for Manchester United this season. He has already picked up 31 points and if you own him, you shouldn’t let him go.
Roberto Firmino – Liverpool
The Liverpool forward has been their highest scoring player with 27 points to date. He has already contributed two goals and two assists. Although the rest of the attack are winning more plaudits, Firmino now looks ready to thrive in a central role. If you own him or can manage to put in a trade offer tempting enough to get him, you absolutely should.
Kyle Naughton – Swansea
The Swansea full-back won’t have been on many peoples wanted lists when the drafts were made, but he has started the season in great form. He is currently in the top ten of points scored with 25. If you have the Kante rule active, Naughton is a good pick for that as he has six points through that. Paul Clement will have his team well organised and they will keep clean sheets. If you want to swap out one of your current defenders, it would be worth seeing if the Englishman is unowned in your game.
Three players to drop
Mesut Ozil
The German is a quality player and it is always a risk to get rid of somebody with his ability. He could be set for a good season, but he has started poorly with only six points in three matches. Arsenal are a mess and Ozil has enough name value to tempt opposing managers into a trade. If there is a player you want and you own Ozil, it would be a good move to offer the Gunners’ man in a trade.
Wayne Rooney
This might be viewed as controversial, but Everton have Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal coming up. Rooney may have scored two in the first three matches, but it seems unlikely that he will maintain that strike rate. At the moment, his fantasy value is high and he could prove to tempt other managers into a trade.
Kieran Trippier
It is amazing how quickly things change in Draft Fantasy Football. After the sale of Kyle Walker, his replacement seemed to be one of the best defensive options in the game. However, a couple of poor displays and the signing of Serge Aurier means that Trippier’s value has plummeted. If you own him, you should try and get rid of him in any way possible.
