Any Draft Fantasy Football manager worth their salt will know that the most effective defensive pick is one often an attacking full-back who bombs down the wings and looks to get involved in attacking play. The high scoring displays of the likes of Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses showed as much.
That made late transfer window arrival Serge Aurier an immediately attractive option as a waiver addition. The Ivory Coast international had been involved in more goals than any other defender during his spell in Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain and his attacking intent will surely see him pick up points for fun.
Switching between a wing-back and a full-back role as Mauricio Pochettino alternates between a back three and a back four, he has shown that intent at Wembley in the white of Tottenham too. His power and pace has left wingers and full-backs struggling to handle him, as he showed against West Ham at the weekend.
However, he also highlighted a less attractive aspect of his game as he was needlessly sent off for a second yellow in the most unnecessary of rash challenges. Previously, he has served lengthy suspensions for red cards and off the field behaviour which would make him a waste of space sitting on the bench of your Draft Fantasy squad.
Aurier clearly has prolific point earning potential, his return of a goal or assist every five games throughout his career proves that, but his temperament may be a concern. Under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, it may be fair to expect a more controlled attitude and behaviour both on and off the pitch, but selecting him for your squad is still a risk.
With only three places on the bench for outfield players, often used to cater for suspensions and injuries, it is worth considering. However, with a number of popular defenders underperforming, such as those at Everton, he may be worth a gamble if he hasn’t been picked up in your league.
