Everyone knows that your first round pick should be the superstar who will lead the way for your team throughout the season. That usually means a forward or attacking midfielder, but this season there are plenty of reasons not to go for many of the Premier League’s biggest names when making your Draft Fantasy first round picks.
Eden Hazard – Chelsea
Set to miss the start of the season after suffering an ankle injury on international duty at the end of the season, Hazard will take some time to rebuild fitness and then get up to top form even once match fit. That could dent his scores over the season and may make a fully fit option more attractive.

Harry Kane – Tottenham Hotspur
Kane is a slow starter. Last season it took him until his fourth game of the season to open his account, in 2015/16 it was his seventh game, in 2014/15 it was his sixth. Over the course of the season, Kane may even out, but don’t be expecting big things in the opening few weeks of the campaign if you’ve picked him up for your Draft Fantasy side.
Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal
Sanchez’s future is still up in the air with just 12 months left on his current contract. If Sanchez does move on, and if his destination is outside the Premier League, then you’ll be forced to pick from the best of the rest who have not already been selected in the draft. Alternatively, if he remains at the Emirates, then there is no telling if he’ll be firing on all cylinders if he is unhappy as a Gunner.
Romelu Lukaku – Everton
Much has been made on social media of Romelu Lukaku’s calamitous debut for Manchester United, but it is a serious reflection of how the Belgian may struggle to cope. It will take time for United to adapt to their new talisman and for Lukaku to adapt to them. Given how he has handled pressure previously, with only five goals in 35 games against top six sides in the past three seasons, it may be best to hold off picking Lukaku.

Sergio Aguero – Manchester City
Like Alexis Sanchez, there are some doubts over the Argentine forward’s future. Even if he remains at the Etihad, Aguero may find himself on the bench regularly if young Gabriel Jesus can maintain his form from his debut campaign in the Premier League, and his Draft Fantasy points tally could suffer as a result.
