Gameweek 2 came around in the blink of an eye, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Several new draft fantasy prospects are now firmly on our radars, with waivers and transfers flying around in every league. Today we take an in-depth look at Gameweek 2, how are fantasy prospects fared, and which players to look out for in the coming weeks.
Swansea 0 – Manchester United 4
The Manchester United bandwagon continued to roll with another impressive 4 – 0 victory over Swansea. United did not have it all their own way in the first half, but once they moved into second gear, there was only going to be one winner. The already popular Lukaku, Pogba and Mkhitaryan have only improved their draft fantasy league standing, amassing a further 28 point between them. Anyone who holds them in their draft squads would be crazy to let them go. The United back line also strengthened their appeal with another clean sheet and a priceless goal for the ever-present Bailly. Swansea, on the other hand, look like a lost team without Sigurosson. Draft prospects look very bleak.
Bournemouth 0 – Watford 2
Much was expected of Bournemouth at the start of the new season following some seemingly shrewd transfers by Eddie Howe. However, after two losses from two, with no goals scored, many will be jumping ship on assets such as Charlie Daniels and Josh King. Watford, on the other hand, have surprised many, with an impressive performance against Liverpool last week, and a confident win away at Bournemouth this time round. Whilst their defence still looked a little shaky, their new signing Richarlison de Andrade looked very impressive and might be a good punt if you’re looking for a midfield differential.
Burnley 0 – West Brom 1
West Brom continued their impressive start to the season with another 1 – 0 victory, this time over Burnley. It was a tight game that could have gone either way but Hal Robson-Kanu came off the bench to give the away side all three points (and a red card.) West Brom’s defence will no doubt have continued investment with a kind run of fixtures continuing for some time to come. In particular, new boy Hegazi impressed again and looks to be a popular pick with an additional 3 points on top of his clean sheet. Phillips got his first attacking returns of the season and may have worked himself back onto some managers radars, many hoping he can replicate his impressive form at the start of last season. Burnley assets look set to be tested with a challenging run of fixtures coming up. It’ll be a brave man to invest in any of their players, at least until after Gameweek 7.
Liverpool 1 – Crystal Palace 0
Goals galore was expected at Anfield with both sides conceding three goals apiece in the first gameweek. But it wasn’t to be, with a cagey affair unfolding on Saturday. The star man from last week, Salah, had to settle for a substitute appearance, with Liverpool set to play 5 games in 15 days. However, it was another of Klopp’s flair players that made the difference on the day. Mané popped up to score the winner, his second goal in as many gameweeks. Liverpool also managed to secure a clean sheet, with pre-season favourite Milner getting a full 90 minutes. However, if Klopp’s squad rotation is anything to go by, investing in any of the back line might be a risky tactic. Crystal Palace improved following their demolition at the hands of Huddersfield Town last week, and will be hoping to put some points on the board with some decent fixtures in the next few weeks. However, news of Zaha’s month-long injury will surely dent investment in Palace’s front line.
Leicester 2 – Brighton 0
Leicester continued their bright start to the season with a confident 2 – 0 victory over Premier League new boys Brighton. Leicester look to have continued where they left off at the tail end of last season, with even want-away midfielder Mahrez putting in a fine performance. With two assists to his name, many will be keen to bring him in, if the proposed transfer does not take place. At the back, new signing Harry Maguire has been quick to make a name for himself. With a goal and an assist in the first two matches, he could be a great purchase, should Leicester sure up things at the back. With a couple of tricky fixtures in the next two Gameweeks (United and Chelsea), some may prefer to take the ‘wait and see’ approach before investing. Brighton now sit on two defeats from two. They look like a good team with decent players who are perhaps struggling to come to terms with the Premier League. Chris Hughton will be hoping his side can get some points on the board soon to avoid a major dent in confidence to his team.
Well that’s it for Part One, ladies and gentlemen. Keep an eye out for Part Two from @jonny.walker. But from me, it’s goodbye and see you next week. I can’t wait!
