Two sides at opposite ends of the Premier League table will clash at the weekend in their final match before the international break when basement boys Crystal Palace take the short trip across London to face rivals Tottenham.
Whilst on paper there won’t be many people giving Roy Hodgson’s side a chance at Wembley Stadium, not least because of Tottenham’s impressive dismantling of reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid during the week, the visit of Palace may not be as easy a test as first imagined for the hosts.
They seem to be well on their way to turning around their woeful start to the season where they failed to earn a point – or score – in their opening seven matches, setting a Premier League record.
The Eagles ended that dismal run with a hugely unexpected victory against champions Chelsea before picking up a battling point against West Ham at the weekend with the last kick of the game, and they were arguably unfortunate to concede a late goal and miss out on a point at Newcastle.
There is little coincidence that the rejuvenation of Hodgson’s side has come at the same time as Wilfried Zaha’s return from injury, with the 24-year-old already scoring twice in three Premier League appearances to earn his side four points – their only four points of the season – and he’ll be at the heart of things again on Sunday.
Part of Zaha’s rise has, in a way, come because of Palace’s injury crisis at the top of the pitch.
With Christian Benteke side-lined for the foreseeable future the options have been thin on the ground and as such Hodgson has been utilising Zaha as his main threat in front of goal – and it has worked up until now.
This spells great news for his Draft Fantasy value too as, instead of being the man that Palace look towards to create opportunities in the final third, he’s now the one they look at to score their goals and add the finishing touch.
In just 347 minutes of football he’s already notched 22 points, being Palace’s fourth-top points scorer, and that comes despite playing over 300 minutes less than some of his other teammates.
He was a potent threat all afternoon during the dramatic draw with West Ham last week, having six shots on goal himself – contributing a third of Palace’s overall tally for the day – whilst he still showcased his daring ability in possession of the ball by attempting six dribbles down the left-wing.
There is certainly no guarantee that he’ll be able to find a way through a strong Tottenham defence but the confidence seems to be running through his veins again and he’ll be keen to impress in north London.
However, one man who may have something to say about that is Dele Alli, who will arrive at Wembley Stadium on Sunday lunchtime full of the joys after an exceptional performance against Real Madrid.
He was undoubtedly the catalyst in Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over their Spanish opponents on Wednesday night, scoring twice, yet his contribution to the win ran much deeper than the goals.
After a relatively slow start to the season by his standards, failing to reach the prolific precedent he set last season when he scored 17 goals and added nine assists, he seems to be nearing his top form at the right time.
The England international starred during the hammering of Liverpool a fortnight ago and, despite missing a golden opportunity to put his side in front at rivals Manchester United last week, Alli will back himself to make a telling impact once again when Crystal Palace come to town this weekend.
Most Draft Fantasy managers – myself included – would be desperately looking to secure Alli for Sunday, perhaps looking to trade a Manchester United or Chelsea midfielder in if he is already owned.
Yet, there is value to be had in selecting Zaha, with Tottenham keeping just two clean sheets in five home matches so far this season, and in the form he is in expect him to be clinical around the penalty spot if given a chance.
Either way, Sunday’s clash offers the opportunity to see two of the Premier League’s in-form attackers take centre stage and expect it to be an intriguing clash between two sides with contrasting fortunes.
