Fortunately for Liverpool fans, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are listed as midfielders. That will go some way to help you pick your best players without overpopulating one area, but it is still up in the air quite how Jurgen Klopp will manage a front three with the likes of Roberto Firmino, Divock Origi, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings all vying for a place. Even young Ben Woodburn may come in with a shout.
By far the highest scorer, Philippe Coutinho has the best argument. Klopp has indicated that he may use the Brazilian in a more central role, similar to that in which Adam Lallana was deployed in 2016/17 season. That would offer flexibility to his usual left wing role and likely see him feature regularly. With a significant number of goals and assists too, Coutinho is a reliable source of points.
However, it’s worth remembering that Coutinho has been known to struggle with injuries at times. Roberto Firmino did not have that problem, barely missing a game in 2016/17 as he nailed down a spot as first choice centre-forward. In pre-season, he has been given game time on the flanks, but he is clearly still the preferred option through the middle.
Sadio Mane is still undergoing rehabilitation for a knee injury suffered in April’s Merseyside Derby and could miss the start of the season. Mohamed Salah’s electric form since joining the club from Roma for £34 million could see him get the nod in the early stages of the season, though the two wingers are likely to share the role throughout the season, potentially meaning that neither is particularly prolific for your draft.
In terms of the out and out strikers, it seems that it may be a gamble to pick any of the Liverpool players. Divock Origi has been featuring on the wing during pre-season, whilst Daniel Sturridge has usually figured centrally, but neither are expected to be earning regular Premier League starts when the season kicks-off.
Picking any Liverpool forwards could be a gamble. It may pay off handsomely. but it seems that the only safe bets from the Liverpool attack are the Brazilian duo of Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.
