Tottenham Hotspur, always the bridesmaid and never the bride. The last couple of seasons have seen Spurs become a really exciting team to watch. They’ve quality all over the pitch and over the summer, they only really need to improve their squad depth. The Tottenham Hotspur first team is almost untouchable and unlike last season, when some negativity still surrounded players like Kane and Alli and their ability to perform again, Spurs players will be high on a lot of people’s shortlists for this season’s Draft Fantasy Football game.

Goalkeepers

Last season, a guy in my league actually drafted Hugo Lloris first. It was a curveball that we mocked him for, yet it worked really well for him as he was pushing for the league most of the season until his players seemingly all gave up trying in the same week. Hugo Lloris will be a high pick up again this season, maybe even the first one of all the goalkeepers. Lloris offers a lot in the way of clean sheets and saves with his form making him the second highest scoring goalkeeper of last season.

Tottenham’s backup keeper is still Michel Vorm who is a very good goalkeeper in his own right. If an injury occurs to Lloris, you could do a lot worse than having Vorm in your team.

Lloris could well be gone by the 2nd or 3rd round, it depends on how some in your league prioritise their goalkeepers when drafting their team.

Defenders

The biggest transfer news of the summer in regard to Tottenham Hotspur is the fact that they sold Kyle Walker for £50mil but I wouldn’t say that this is a disastrous thing as Tottenham have a ready-made replacement in Kieran Trippier. It was a backup role last season for Trippier but he still provided 5 assists in the league and with promotion to the first team, expect this number to rise.

Over at left back for Tottenham Hotspur is the excellent Danny Rose. Injury ruled out Rose for half of the season and it looks like he’ll miss the start of this season but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s still drafted by someone who will just sit on him until he is match fit again. Danny Rose’s injury means that Ben Davies will play from the start of the season and he should prove to be a valuable pick up who you could trade out once Danny Rose returns.

The solid centre back partnership of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen offer players plenty of clean sheets but both are known for getting forward and scoring. I went in early for Alderweireld last season and while he only got the 1 goal last season, the 15 clean sheets alongside Vertonghen were more than worthwhile. For those with the Kante Rule on, expect some further extra points for these centre backs this season.

Tottenham Hotspur will only be looking to buy squad players this summer which helps when scouting this team for the draft. As to when to pick? Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen will be picked up in the 3rd or 4th round while Trippier and Davies should be lingering for a little while longer but probably picked up by rounds 7 and 8.

Midfielders

The biggest question here is do you draft Dele Alli and/or Christian Eriksen in the 1st or 2nd round? Alli has proven that he wasn’t a one season wonder, or as others in my league put it when I brought him into my team in the 15/16 season “a solid 2 points a week player”. Last season, Alli provided 18 goals and 11 assists and I turned down a trade for him for Mahrez who I was being stubborn about. Christian Eriksen, not to be outdone, provided 8 goals and 20 assists.

Two players who may well have big scoring seasons thanks to the implemented Kante Rule are Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier. Wanyama has proven to be a solid player in the middle of the field for Tottenham Hotspur while Eric Dier didn’t have the same effect on the team in 16/17 as he did in 15/16. The 15/16 season, Eric Dier was listed as a defender which boosted his points hugely. If you’re not playing with the Kante Rule then these two may be good pickups in the later rounds to fill your team but with the Kante Rule enforced, expect both to go around the 8th or 9th rounds.

Erik Lamela is still suffering from a long-term injury while Moussa Sissoko doesn’t look like he’ll be gracing the starting line up anytime soon. Mousa Dembélé always looks to keep the Spurs midfield in shape but doesn’t seem to offer much in the way of points, he could be another beneficiary of the Kante Rule but I still see him being free after the draft.

One player whose classification as a midfielder in this year’s game could prove crucial is Heung-Min Son. I still see Son as a forward, he’s the first name you think of when covering for Harry Kane and if he can match his return of 14 goals and 9 assists from last season but now classed as a midfielder, that’s some good extra bonus points. Son as a midfielder will likely be drafted in the middle rounds, possibly around round 7 or 8.

Forwards

If Harry Kane isn’t one of the first 3 players drafted in your league then I’d be surprised. This season, it really will be down to the luck of the draw as to if you get Harry Kane or not. People seem to be stuck on the idea that Harry Kane won’t be able to do it again but it’s been 3 seasons of consistent performances now, those doubters are surely quiet now.

Harry Kane does seem susceptible to the odd injury though which opens the door for Heung-Min Son. As seen above, Son is classed as a midfielder this season which is an opportunity for extra points that shouldn’t be passed up.

The other available option for you from Tottenham Hotspur is Vincent Janssen but let’s be honest, based on his showing last season, he may be an okay 3rd choice striker for your team but I can see him still being free after the draft.

Wildcard

Ben Davies is my wildcard pick for Tottenham Hotspurs. He’s the only one whose place from the start of the season is truly under threat with the returning Danny Rose on the horizon. If Ben Davies starts the season strong and provides a little extra to the Spurs team then there’s no reason to expect him to keep Danny Rose sidelined for long.

Conclusion

There are some excellent prospects in the Tottenham Hotspur team for you. Kane, Alli, Eriksen and Lloris could all be taken by the end of round 2, probably not even that long for Kane and Alli while the rest of the first team squad will be picked up in the middle rounds. The majority of the Spurs first team does usually mean good points for your draft team.
