The second of the newly promoted teams and the second of the teams experiencing their first season of Premier League football. Huddersfield Town were certainly the surprise package in the Championship last season, their early season odds had them in the relegation battle but manager David Wagner led Huddersfield Town to the playoff final where they secured promotion to the Premier League.

Huddersfield Town have actually given Everton a run for their money in how busy they’ve been, to date, 9 new players have been signed up but will any of those 9 feature in your draft fantasy team?

Goalkeepers

Danny Ward of Liverpool was Huddersfield Town’s number 1 keeper last season but it was only a loan deal, Ward is now back at Liverpool and while another deal for him wouldn’t surprise me, it’s not currently on the cards. Huddersfield Town though aren’t short of goalkeepers but it’s their new loan signing Jonas Lössl who looks to be taking the number 1 shirt.

Jonas Lössl may be a new name to a lot of us but the 28-year-old has plenty of experience from spells in the Danish, French and German top divisions. Lössl has also been capped once at international level for Denmark. Joel Coleman looks to be spending the season watching on from the bench, barring some cup appearances.

For Jonas Lössl, you’ll have to consider the Burnley Rule and expect Lössl to start almost every game but primarily rack up points with the shots saved bonuses. He’ll be first team for Huddersfield but 2nd choice goalkeeper for us draft managers, expect Lössl to still be around in the final rounds of the draft.

Defenders

The transfer fee for Christopher Schindler was the most Huddersfield Town had ever spent on a player last season with his performances and promotion winning penalty more than paying that back. Huddersfield Town have since smashed their transfer fee record repeatedly but expect Schindler to remain in the starting line-up for this coming season. Another mainstay is of course, the club captain Tommy Smith. Smith has been a regular starter for the last 4 years but last year, Tommy Smith added goals to his game, something that we all love in fantasy football is goals from defenders. If goals from defenders are your thing, then Michael Hefele notched up 5 goals in all competitions for Huddersfield Town last season.

One of Huddersfield Town’s 9 new signings is Scott Malone from Fulham racked up an impressive 6 goals in the Championship as well last season. Malone’s performances got him voted into the Championship team of the season. Huddersfield Town really could be a team to consider when it comes to those final defenders in your draft squad, clean sheets and goals, what more could you ask for?

I do see Huddersfield Town going straight back down to the Championship, which of course means a bad time to be a Huddersfield Town defender but, if you’re looking for a 4th or 5th pick for your defenders, the guys from Huddersfield Town may not be a bad pick up in the slightest. Expect them to still be around in the later rounds.

Midfielders

One player that we should all know, mainly for infamously snubbing Inter Milan to join Hull City, is Thomas Ince, now 25, he should now be hitting his peak powers as a winger. A couple of very impressive seasons at Derby County and some Premier League experience already to his name convinced Huddersfield Town to part with a rumoured £11million for the player. Thomas Ince will be in the starting XI and could very well break into double digits for goals and assists. He could even be a great 8th or 9th round pick up, around that time you’re looking for some hidden gems.

Speaking of hidden gems, Kasey Palmer’s performances last season for Huddersfield Town convinced them to re-loan the Chelsea youngster while Huddersfield Town went one better for Aaron Mooy. Mooy was on loan last season but his man of the match performances was more than enough to convince Huddersfield Town to sign him up officially from Manchester City. Rajiv van La Parra may also be a new name to you but the half-brother of Liverpool’s midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum put in some electric performances in the Championship and will be looking to replicate them again.

Huddersfield Town’s midfield do offer us some potential hidden gems going into the new season. If it’s around the 8th or 9th round and you’re looking for some potential quality, then Thomas Ince and Aaron Mooy could well provide you with that. Huddersfield Town’s other midfielders will most likely still be available for free but keep an eye out on how they perform to see if they’re worth bringing into your team.

Forwards

Huddersfield Town’s strike force of Elias Kachunga and Nahki Wells provided 22 of Huddersfield’s 56 goals in the Championship last season, boosted them into those playoff positions. Kachunga and Wells have now been joined by new signings Laurent Depoitre and Steve Mounié on 2 and 4 year deals respectively.

Depoitre could very well be a more experienced back up striker for the season but up front it’ll be any two of the three mentioned for me. Kachunga and Wells are proven in the system and deserve to start for Huddersfield Town in the Premier League but Steve Mounié is the latest player that Huddersfield Town broke their transfer record for (and by quite a distance) so expect to see him start.

There are goals in Huddersfield Town’s forwards but none of them are proven in the Premier League. See how they’re pre-season goes for an idea on their planned setup for the season and go in for them as your 3rd choice strikers in the draft.

Wildcard

Aaron Mooy gets my pick here. He had such an incredible season for Huddersfield Town in the Championship. Mooy was a key component in the push for promotion which got him voted into the Championship team of the year and this permanent transfer from Manchester City to Huddersfield Town could be what cements Mooy’s reputation as a Premier League player.

Conclusion

There are a lot of positives in the Huddersfield Town team, I do see them going back down again but they’ll take a couple of big scalps along the way. There’s goals in this team in every position. Thomas Ince, Aaron Mooy, Tommy Smith & Christopher Schindler should all feature on your shortlists for the upcoming season. They won’t be the top picks but they could very well be ingenious picks.
